Free Fire
Free Fire is a mobile battle royale title available for Android and iOS, created and distributed by Garena.
The game launched on December 8, 2017, and within a short time it exploded in popularity, eventually ranking as the world’s most downloaded mobile game in 2019.
By 2021, the game had grown to more than 150 million people playing daily, and its total earnings crossed one billion dollars.
Even in February 2024, Free Fire continued to hold a massive player base with nearly 100 million active users.
In September 2021, Garena released Free Fire Max, a more advanced edition of the game designed with upgraded visuals, better lighting, and enhanced sound quality.
Around the same time, the game’s main yearly esports tournament, the Free Fire World Series, broke viewership records, becoming the most-watched esports event then, with over 5.4 million peak live viewers.
Gameplay
In Free Fire, players control their character from a third-person viewpoint, using the main action button to fire weapons or throw different items while moving through the battlefield. The character can jump, crawl, or lie flat depending on the situation, giving players flexibility during combat. To avoid incoming damage, they can also deploy a Gloo Wall grenade, which instantly creates a protective shield for temporary cover.
Game modes
Free Fire features more than 15 different game modes, such as Team Deathmatch, Clash Squad, Big Head, Explosive Jump, Cold Steel, Zombie Hunt, Rampage, and Pet Mania. Most of these modes appear only during limited-time events, while the core options—Battle Royale, Clash Squad, and Lone Wolf—remain permanently available.
The Battle Royale mode in Free Fire supports up to 52 players, all of whom drop onto an island with no weapons and must gather gear from various locations to survive. The goal is to outlast every other player, and choosing to play this mode in ranked format will directly influence a player’s rank. There are six available maps—Bermuda, Bermuda Remastered, Kalahari, Purgatory, Alpine, and NeXTerra—and the mode can be played solo, with a partner, or in a squad.
Clash Squad is a 4v4 team-based mode where players buy weapons and utilities from a round-based shop before the fighting starts. Matches use a best-of-seven system, lasting between four and seven rounds, and a round ends when one team is completely eliminated, whether through enemy fire or environmental hazards. Since 2022, this mode uses the same maps as Battle Royale and can be played in either Ranked or Casual format. Squad are the same as those in Battle Royale mode. The mode can be played as either Ranked or Casual.
Lone Wolf is a variation of the Clash Squad mode that can be played as either a 1-player versus 1-player or 2-player versus 2-player “duo” format with more intricate rules. In each round, both sides have the opportunity to select their equipment for the next 2 rounds. The game is played in a best-of-5 format. If both teams have won 4 rounds each, a final round begins with both sides able to choose any weapon they prefer. All players are automatically equipped with basic items such as a vest and helmet from the start of the round. This mode takes place on its own map known as Iron Dome.
Craftland in Free Fire gives players the ability to build their own maps using an in-game creation tool, letting them shape environments exactly the way they want. These custom maps can be shared with others and played online, and the mode even includes script-editing options for deeper customization. With features like adding structures, objects, and various interactive elements, creators have the freedom to design unique gameplay experiences.

Character system
Free Fire includes a roster of more than 50 characters, each equipped with a distinct ability that falls into either the active or passive category. Active abilities require players to trigger them through a dedicated button during matches, while passive abilities function automatically. Every character can use a total of four abilities at once, combining their own skill with three additional skills taken from other characters.
A character in Free Fire can equip one active ability and three passive abilities taken from other characters, allowing players to mix and match skills for different playstyles. Each character also comes with a unique backstory, and several of them are based on well-known celebrities featured in official collaborations, including Chrono inspired by Cristiano Ronaldo, Dimitri and Thiva created in partnership with Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike, A-Patroa from the Anitta collaboration, Alok modeled after DJ Alok, and JBeibs introduced through the Justin Bieber partnership. All characters can be unlocked either by spending gold—earned through matches and events—or by purchasing Diamonds with real money.
Pet System
In Free Fire, pets act as companions that offer helpful abilities during combat. By 2023, players had access to a selection of 21 pets, each equipped with its own unique skill. Some of these abilities work automatically as passive effects, while others must be activated by the player. The pet “Poring” was introduced through a collaboration with Ragnarok Online, adding a crossover element to the roster. Pets can also be personalized with various skins and emotes, giving players more ways to express their style.
Ranking System
Free Fire uses a seven-level ranking ladder with multiple sub-divisions, such as Bronze I, II, and III, to place players according to their skill and overall performance. Ranking points are earned through factors like kills, damage dealt, survival duration, and final placement, allowing players to climb from Bronze all the way to Grandmaster. At the end of each season, ranks are partially reset—for example, a Silver III player may drop to Bronze I or II. The game offers two ranked categories: the Battle Royale rank mode and the Clash Squad rank mode.
Collaborations
Free Fire heavily relies on collaborations with well-known franchises as a key part of its marketing approach. Over the years, the game has partnered with various video games, celebrities, TV series, and movies to increase its global reach. These collaborations are divided into two categories: global partnerships that appear for all players, and regional ones that are exclusive to certain countries or areas. In 2022, the game teamed up with singer Justin Bieber, introducing his track “Beautiful Love” directly inside Free Fire as part of the event.

Anime adaptation
An anime adaptation of Free Fire was officially revealed on May 13, 2024, as a joint production between Garena and Kadokawa. The project is being funded collaboratively, with Kadokawa Qingyu, the company’s international division, overseeing production management. Animation duties are handled by Candy Box, while Ken Takahashi serves as the director, and the music is being created by Sus4 Inc.

Controversies
In January 2022, PUBG publisher Krafton filed a copyright infringement lawsuit against Garena and its parent company Sea, claiming that Free Fire and Free Fire Max copied various elements from PUBG: Battlegrounds and PUBG Mobile. The complaint stated that Garena replicated several key aspects of PUBG’s design, including its trademark “air-drop” opening sequence, gameplay structure, weapon and armor combinations, unique objects and locations, as well as the overall visual style such as colors, materials, and textures.
On 14 February 2022, India’s Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology banned Free Fire along with 53 other applications, citing national security and privacy concerns under Section 69A of the Information Technology Act.
In October 2024, the FFWS 2024 trailer generated backlash after a scene showed a character running up stairs that featured a “Ram Darbar” emblem alongside cultural symbols from multiple countries. The placement of the emblem on the steps was viewed as disrespectful toward the Hindu deity Rama, prompting criticism in India and Indonesia and calls for an official apology. Garena removed the original trailer and later uploaded an edited version on Free Fire’s Malaysian YouTube channel.
