Kylie Kristen Jenner (born August 10, 1997) is an American media personality, socialite, and businesswoman. She first rose to fame through the E! reality show Keeping Up with the Kardashians (2007–2021) and later appeared in its Hulu continuation, The Kardashians (2022–present). Jenner is the founder and owner of Kylie Cosmetics and is among the most-followed people on Instagram.

In 2012, at the age of 14, Kylie Jenner and her sister Kendall partnered with clothing brand PacSun to launch their fashion line, Kendall & Kylie. Three years later, Jenner introduced her first beauty product line, Kylie Lip Kits, which was rebranded as Kylie Cosmetics in 2016.

By the mid-2010s, Jenner had become a prominent figure in pop culture. In 2014 and 2015, Time magazine included the Jenner sisters in its list of the “Most Influential Teens in the World,” highlighting their strong impact on social media. In 2017, Kylie Jenner appeared on the Forbes Celebrity 100 list, making her the youngest person to earn a spot. That same year, she starred in her own spin-off reality series, Life of Kylie.

Jenner’s fortune has often sparked debate. In 2019, Forbes estimated her net worth at $1 billion, naming her the youngest “self-made billionaire” at age 21. However, this title faced widespread criticism. In 2020, Forbes accused her of inflating business figures and forging tax documents to appear wealthier than she was.

Early life

Kylie Kristen Jenner was born on August 10, 1997, in Los Angeles, California. She is the youngest daughter of former Olympic decathlon champion Caitlyn Jenner (formerly Bruce Jenner) and television personality and businesswoman Kris Jenner. Kylie has one full sister, Kendall Jenner, along with eight older half-siblings. On Caitlyn’s side, her half-siblings are Burt, Brandon, Brody, and Cassandra Marino, while on Kris’s side, she shares siblings with the Kardashians—Kourtney, Kim, Khloé, and Rob. Her parents separated in 2015, shortly before Caitlyn’s gender transition.

Kylie Jenner studied at Sierra Canyon School, where she was also part of the cheerleading team and performed in school and community plays. In 2012, she switched to homeschooling and joined an at-home education program. She later graduated with a high school diploma in July 2015 from Laurel Springs School in Ojai, California.

Career

In 2007, Kylie Jenner began appearing on the reality TV series Keeping Up with the Kardashians alongside her parents and siblings—Kendall, Kourtney, Kim, Khloé, and Rob. The show, which documented the family’s personal and professional lives, became a huge success for the E! network and led to several spin-offs such as Kourtney and Kim Take Miami, Khloé & Lamar, Kourtney and Kim Take New York, and Kourtney and Khloé Take The Hamptons, where Kylie made guest appearances.

Outside of the show, Kylie Jenner and Kendall gained more public attention. In August 2011, they hosted Glee: The 3D Concert Movie premiere in Los Angeles. That same year, they were named Style Stars of the Year by Seventeen magazine, which also chose them as its official “Style Ambassadors.” In early 2012, the sisters co-hosted the premiere of The Vow in Hollywood and interviewed the cast at The Hunger Games premiere in Los Angeles. Later in 2012, Kylie appeared with Kendall and her mother Kris in an episode of America’s Next Top Model.

Kylie Jenner

In June 2014, Kylie and Kendall Jenner co-hosted the Much Music Video Awards in Toronto, Canada, where Kylie also made her acting debut in a promotional clip for the show. Later that year, the sisters appeared in singer PartyNextDoor’s music video Recognize, and Kylie was also featured in Jaden Smith’s music video Blue Ocean.

That same year, Kylie and Kendall co-authored a dystopian science fiction novel titled Rebels: City of Indra: The Story of Lex and Livia, which followed the lives of twin girls surviving in a futuristic biosphere called Indra. However, the book faced heavy criticism for being ghostwritten. Ghostwriter Maya Sloan revealed that the sisters had only provided a two-page outline, while she did most of the writing. In response, their creative director Elizabeth Killmond-Roman explained that Kylie and Kendall were actively involved through frequent calls and discussions.

Despite this, the novel received mostly negative reviews and sold just 13,000 copies in its first four months. A sequel titled Time of the Twins was later released, also credited to the Jenner sister.

2015–2018: Rise of Kylie Cosmetics

2015–2018: Rise of Kylie Cosmetics and Media Presence

In May 2015, the Kylie Jenner sisters were booed while introducing Kanye West’s performance at the Billboard Music Awards. That same month, an episode of Keeping Up with the Kardashians aired in which Kylie admitted to receiving lip fillers, confirming long-standing speculation. Before this reveal, she had claimed that her fuller lips were due to makeup tricks such as lip liner. Her confession went viral, sparking the “Kylie Jenner Challenge,” where fans attempted to enlarge their lips using suction methods. Jenner responded by discouraging the practice and clarifying that she never intended to influence young girls to change their appearance.

August 2015, Kylie announced her first lipstick line, the Kylie Lip Kit, which officially launched later that year. She and Kendall also appeared in singer Justine Skye’s I’m Yours music video in November 2015.

By February 2016, her brand was rebranded as Kylie Cosmetics, with production scaling up from 15,000 to 500,000 lip kits. In March, she released a three-minute promotional video for her lip glosses directed by Colin Tilley, featuring models Karin Jinsui, Mara Teigen, and Jasmine Sanders. The video’s soundtrack, Three Strikes by the band Terror Jr, sparked rumors that Jenner was the group’s lead singer, though she later denied involvement.

In May 2016, Kylie made her musical debut by rapping on Burberry Perry’s track Beautiful Day, featuring Lil Yachty, Jordyn Woods, and Justine Skye. The following month, she starred in PartyNextDoor’s music video Come and See Me.

In April 2017, Kylie Jenner surprised students at Rio Americano High School’s prom in Sacramento, attending as the date of junior Albert Ochoa after his original date declined.

That same year, Kylie was ranked #59 on the Forbes Celebrity 100 list, earning an estimated $41 million and becoming the youngest person on the list at just 19 years old.

In August 2017, Kylie Jenner starred in her own reality series, Life of Kylie, which focused on her personal and professional life.

In May 2018, Kylie Cosmetics released Kris Cosmetics, a collaboration with her mother Kris Jenner, in honor of Mother’s Day. Later that year, she teamed up again with Kim Kardashian for the KKW x Kylie Cosmetics collection, which launched on Black Friday after their first collaboration in 2017. Also in 2018, she launched the Kylie Cosmetics mobile app.

2021–present: Business and television expansions

2020–Present: Business Expansions and New Television Era

In 2020, Kylie Jenner and her family announced that their long-running reality series, Keeping Up with the Kardashians, would be coming to an end after twenty seasons and nearly 15 years on air.

In August 2021, Jenner teased the launch of her new swimwear brand, Kylie Swim, which officially debuted on September 17 through her website. However, the line faced backlash on social media, with critics pointing out quality issues and claiming the designs were impractical for actual use. Just days later, on September 21, she expanded her empire with the introduction of Kylie Baby, a skincare and haircare line designed for infants.

In January 2022, Jenner achieved a major milestone by becoming the first woman to surpass 300 million Instagram followers, overtaking Ariana Grande.

That same year, the Kardashian-Jenner family returned to television with their new Hulu reality show, The Kardashians, which premiered on April 14, 2022. The series features Kylie, her sisters Kourtney, Kim, Khloé, and Kendall, as well as their mother Kris Jenner, alongside appearances from ex- and current partners such as Scott Disick, Travis Barker, Tristan Thompson, Corey Gamble, and Kanye West. The first season aired exclusively on Disney+. A second season premiered on September 22, 2022, and a third followed on May 25, 2023.

In 2024, Kylie Jenner further expanded her business ventures by launching her clothing line Khy, along with a canned cocktail brand named Sprinter, available in flavors such as black cherry, peach, grapefruit, and lime.

Personal life

Relationships

In 2011, Jenner briefly dated Australian singer Cody Simpson.

By August 2014, she was linked to rapper Tyga after being seen together at her 17th birthday party. Shortly after, Tyga ended his engagement to Blac Chyna. When Kylie Jenner turned 18 in 2015, the two confirmed their relationship, and she later appeared in his music videos for Stimulated and Dope’d Up. The couple split in April 2017.

That same month, Jenner was first spotted with rapper Travis Scott at Coachella. On February 1, 2018, they welcomed their daughter. She also appeared in Scott’s music video for Stop Trying to Be God from his Astroworld album. The pair broke up in September 2019 but quarantined together during the COVID-19 pandemic to co-parent, which eventually led to a reconciliation. In September 2021, Jenner announced they were expecting their second child, and on February 2, 2022, she gave birth to their son. However, in January 2023, reports confirmed they had separated once again.

As of April 2023, Jenner is dating French-American actor Timothée Chalamet.

Underpaying factory workers

Remake, a non-profit organization, identified Global Brands Group as the manufacturer behind the Kendall + Kylie clothing line. The group alleged that the company withheld wages from factory workers even after their work was completed and reported mass layoffs in Los Angeles that impacted over fifty thousand workers. This sparked criticism across social media, with many fans urging Jenner to compensate the workers. In response, the Kendall + Kylie brand issued a statement clarifying that it was not owned by Global Brands Group.

“Kylie” trademark

In February 2017, Australian singer Kylie Minogue won a legal dispute against Jenner over the trademark of the name “Kylie.” Jenner had applied in 2015 to trademark the name in the United States for use in “advertising services” and “endorsement services.”

Seed Beauty

Seed Beauty filed a lawsuit against Coty and Kylie Cosmetics, alleging that Coty’s $600 million purchase of Kylie Cosmetics shares from Jenner was a strategy to gain access to the company’s trade secrets.

Philanthropy

Jenner has been involved in various philanthropic efforts over the years. Kylie Jenner set up an eBay account to auction her old clothing, with proceeds benefiting the Children’s Hospital Los Angeles. In January 2014, she joined her sisters Khloé and Kendall, along with Lil Twist and The Game, for a charity bowling event in Studio City to support The Robin Hood Foundation. Later that year, she and Kendall also took part in singer Chris Brown’s Kick’n It For Charity Celebrity Kickball games in Glendale, California.

In December 2015, Kylie Jenner donated Christmas gifts to the Los Angeles LGBT Teen Center, and in January 2017, she gave $10,000 to her then-friend Jordyn Woods to help with her father’s memorial costs. On her birthday that same year, she announced a $500,000 donation to Teen Cancer America from sales of her Birthday Collection.

Kylie Jenner is also an ambassador for Smile Train, an organization that provides surgeries for children with cleft lips and palates. She became one of its youngest ambassadors, visited Peru with the charity on Life of Kylie, and in 2016 launched a special-edition lip kit called Smile, donating $159,500 to fund 638 surgeries. In September 2019, during an appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, she donated $750,000 to Nest of Love, a Florida-based feminist organization that supports young women and low-income communities.

In January 2020, Jenner donated $1 million to five organizations in Australia to aid relief efforts during the bushfires. Two months later, she, Kris Jenner, and Coty donated over 6,000 pounds of hand sanitizer to Southern California hospitals. That same year, she contributed another $1 million to supply face masks, shields, and other protective equipment for healthcare workers battling the COVID-19 pandemic.
